GSF matches give you XP and credits, but otherwise it's completely independent of the rest of the game. Like most PvP there is a learning curve (you will die a lot at first), but it's really enjoyable once you get the hang of it. The overall setup is similar to WoT and MWO, and the combat is similar to Star Conflict.

All accounts have full access to it at level 1 with no restrictions.

Galactic Starfighter (GSF) is 12v12 free flight space combat PvP. If you haven’t ever played before, it’s basically KOTOR mixed with WoW, and playing it 1-50 as a single player game for the story is a great experience even if you have no intention of participating in endgame activities. There have been a lot of changes and improvements over the past two years, so it’s definitely worth checking out again if you left back near launch. If you plan on participating in the endgame or playing a lot of alts subscribing is recommended, although not strictly necessary.

To level from 50-55 you need to buy the ROTHC Digital Expansion or get it free for subscribing. Buying anything in the Cartel Market (cash shop) or having previously subscribed gets you Preferred status which removes or loosens many of the restrictions and everyone should get it if they decide to play the game. You can level a character from 1 to 50 and experience the story as a f2p account without much hardship. SWTOR is free to play with a subscription option.
